Welcome DNA Enthusiasts

Thank you for visiting.

This blog/website is organized to help visitors learn about Genetic Genealogy. Use the menu at the top or the one in the sidebar to navigate. This is a work in progress.

What is Genetic Genealogy?

If you don’t find your answer here, consider joining our MGS-DIG. This is a Virtual DNA Interest Group meeting on Zoom and hosted by Maine Genealogical Society. We gather together once each month to share our experiences, to learn, and to assist each other in this new adventure. Meetings are by invitation only.

August DIG Meeting

Sunday Aug.16 at 9 am in Capitol Park under the shade trees.

Our DIG meeting was a success last month. It was so great to get together and talk DNA face to face with other humans. We will try it again this month – weather permitting with a rain date the following Sunday.

Due to some personal scheduling issues, our DIG meeting will be moving to Sundays for a while (or perhaps permanently). We are also moving the meeting time up a hour to beat the heat. So we have two changes we will have to get oriented to – different day – different start time!

There are some parking spaces by the park on Union St. and we found a nice spot right across from the 19 Union Street building (shown in the picture above).  Don’t forget to bring a chair and use the restroom before you arrive.

Downside – no restrooms, no public internet, no big screen TV. We still got things done using Peter’s laptop and the hotspot on my phone. However, 2 hours appears to be the limit for most folks – we dispersed quickly at noon with everyone looking for the nearest restroom 😉

Central Maine DIG is looking for an indoor space we can use this winter for our SUNDAY meetings. We seldom have more then 6 or 7 people show up on any meeting day, so we should be looking for a space in the Augusta area large enough to accommodate up to 12 people with proper social distancing. Internet would be nice. If you know of any such place please let one of us know.

Stay safe and hope to see you Sunday.
Peter, Nancy, & Jesse

Feb. 15 DIG Meeting

Discussing genetic genealogy with like minded folks. What a great way to beat the winter blues! Come join us at the Maine State Library this Saturday from 10 to noon. Bring your questions.

Nancy will lead an informal discussion about pedigree charts. These charts are extremely useful in organizing and understanding genetic genealogy projects. You may want to bring paper and pencil for this one 😉

January Meeting

Well, last month was just too busy for you folks. Jesse and Nancy were the only ones to attend. The two of us had a great time sharing our stories and adventures – too bad you missed it!

However, all is not lost, Jesse will try again this Saturday. He has will share his interesting journey to discover his father’s birth parents using traditional genealogy along with DNA testing.

Hope to see you there – Saturday 10am Maine State Library. NOTE if the library is closed due to weather – so are we.
